A Federal Emergency Management Agency official told Floridians in a frank message recently that they should look at their driver’s licence to know if they need Flood insurance or not.

Roy Wright, who oversees FEMA’s National Flood Insurance programme said Floridians should always look at their driver’s licences, rather than bother with flood zone maps.

FEMA’s flood insurance programme covers nearly three times as many policies in Florida than in any other US state.

Most of the state’s coastal communities are predicated to be underwater by 2100, and Miami Beach is already flooding regularly.
